AMBUJA TAJ SHANTINIKETAN — New Project Coming Up in Shantiniketan, Bolpur
Ambuja Neotia Enters Shantiniketan's Heritage Hospitality Market
Ambuja Neotia has announced plans to develop a luxury hospitality circuit in partnership with Taj Hotels, featuring seven premium hotels across destinations including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Lataguri, Digha, the Sundarbans, Shantiniketan, and Raichak, with a planned investment of roughly Rs 1,200 crore for 600 five-star rooms across the circuit. Shantiniketan — the Tagore-founded university town now carrying UNESCO World Heritage status — is one of the named seven.
Location and Connectivity
Shantiniketan is a neighbourhood of Bolpur town in the Bolpur subdivision of Birbhum district in West Bengal, India, approximately 152 km north of Kolkata. The town is served by Bolpur Shantiniketan railway station, which runs Vande Bharat and Shatabdi Express services on the Howrah–New Jalpaiguri line.
The Destination: Cultural Heritage and Second-Home Appeal
Shantiniketan was established by Debendranath Tagore and later expanded by his son, Rabindranath Tagore, whose vision became what is now a university town with the creation of Visva-Bharati. The red-soil terrain, the Kopai river, the Khoai crafts market, and the university town Rabindranath Tagore built around Visva-Bharati draw a steady stream of heritage tourists and second-home seekers from Kolkata.
Shantiniketan carries UNESCO World Heritage status, inscribed in 2023 under cultural criteria, which typically brings buffer-zone construction scrutiny.
Ambuja Neotia's Hospitality Track Record
Ambuja Neotia's sister hospitality asset at Raichak (Taj Ganga Kutir) offers a useful benchmark — the Group has invested Rs 300 crore in its rejuvenation with a further Rs 50 crore planned, its single largest hospitality outlay to date.
Several landmark Ambuja Neotia projects have been developed in and around Kolkata including the city's first condoville project called Udayan, the pioneering City Centre mall that redefined retail in the city and Ffort Raichak which was the first luxury weekend getaway in the city. The Group has also developed the Bhagirathi Neotia Woman & Child Care Centre in the city in addition to the landmark EcoSpace business park, and its portfolio encompasses several townships and housing projects in addition to several upcoming projects in eastern India.
Related Residential Presence in Shantiniketan
Ambuja Neotia's Upoban, located at Shantiniketan, is a township spreading over 9 acres and offering modern amenities and facilities to residents. This established residential footprint demonstrates the Group's longer-standing engagement with the Shantiniketan market.
Project Status
The Taj-branded hospitality project in Shantiniketan, Bolpur is in pre-announcement phase — no RERA filing, no price yet. IHCL's July 2025 formal agreement with Ambuja Neotia covers 15 new hotels expanding their combined portfolio to over 40 properties, with 15 confirmed sites spanning West Bengal, Sikkim and Himachal Pradesh, developed via a mix of greenfield, brownfield and conversion models, and these projects are expected to be completed over three to seven years from the July 2025 signing.
